So I wanted to write an article about the best movies for guys, and I'd originally planned to focus mostly on action movies, as that's the theme for the site. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought I'd like to include all kinds of movies that are aimed at men in general. So below, you'll find multiple movies in various genres. The one thing all the movies have in common is that they're for guys.

The 50 Best Guy Movies of All Time

I've expressed my admiration for the work of Tim Dirks over at Filmsite.org elsewhere on the site, and sure enough, when I started researching the "best movies for guys," his page on the subject came up first. (See Guy Films for the complete list.) He recaps an article from Mens Journal where they listed THEIR favorite 50 guy movies of all time. Some of the highlights from the list that I'm particularly fond of include:

1. Dirty Harry - Guy movies don't get any better than this, period. Thankfully there's been no talk of a Dirty Harry remake yet, but I'm sure there will be. If they're smart, Timothy Olyphant will portray the Eastwood role, but you know they're not smart.

2. Die Hard - We have a whole section of the site devoted to the Die Hard movies, and I don't know that I have much to add here.

3. The Road Warrior - I love this movie, and I've loved it since I was a teenager. But I think I'm one of the few people who prefer Mad Max.

4. Rocky - Another movie that doesn't age and that I never get tired of. Rocky is and always will be Stallone's masterpiece.

5. Full Metal Jacket - This is a war movie from Stanley Kubrick. The first half of the movie is my favorite, but the entire thing is brilliant. (Everything Stanley Kubrick directed is brilliant.)

6. Raging Bull - Robert Deniro is great, as always. And it's in black and white! I love me some good old-fashioned black and white.

7. Goodfellas - I've never been a fan of Ray Liotta, but he's great in this movie. Of course, everyone else in this movie is great too. It's my favorite gangster movie. (I'll write a few words about The Godfather later down the page.)

8. Reservoir Dogs - I was so excited to watch this with my son the other day. (He's 15.) I don't know that I'll have that kind of excitement watching Reservoir Dogs with my daughters when they get to that age, but maybe we'll watch Jackie Brown instead.

9. Fight Club - A movie about guys, for guys, by guys. Chuck Palahniuk might be gay, but this movie is as full of testosterone as any other movie on the list. If you've never seen it, Fight Club is a rare treat.

10. Unforgiven - My favorite Western, and my favorite Clint Eastwood movie. Stellar performances from some of the greatest actors ever--Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman, and Richard Harris. And Eastwood himself is in rare form, both as a director and as the star.

You'll notice that not all of these qualify as action movies, but quite a few do. There were several movies on the list there that I think are overrated. Some of these include:

1. The Godfather - It's an okay movie, but I don't understand what all the fuss is about. No way does it deserve to be almost as high on the list of greatest movies ever made as Citizen Kane. It's too long, and it's too slow. I know it's supposed to be the quintessential source of a guy's wisdom on film, but I really think it's time to expose The Godfather as the most overrated movie for guys of all time.

2. Apocalypse Now - I like this movie a lot, but like The Godfather, it's way overrated. Brando's performance is entertaining enough. Heck, all of the performances are entertaining. It's just that people have gone on and on about what a great film it is that it's impossible to see it and not have your expectations crushed.

3. The Usual Suspects - Way overrated, and the big "surprise" ending isn't really much of a surprise ending at all. I don't even really think it's such a masculine film, even though most of the main characters are male.
