This section of the site focuses on action movies on Blu-ray. One of the great things about living in this day and age is that you can get a lot of really great action movies in high definition for very little cost. At the time of this writing, all of the following action movies are available at Amazon for less than $10. (Keep in mind that their pricing changes over time, so if a listed Blu-ray is no longer available for under $10, please don't get mad at us.)

1. Gran Torino - Of course, Clint Eastwood is famous for making action movies and westerns. But Gran Torino is a different kind of action movie for him, as he plays an admittedly racist and grumpy old man. The action scenes are good, although there aren't as many of them as you might be used to in films like Aliens. But Gran Torino is an extraordinary film in a lot of ways, and at $9.99, it's well worth owning.

2. The Princess Bride - More of a children's fantasy than an action movie per se, we're going to include it in our list of action movies on Blu-ray anyway. There are plenty of action scenes in the movie, but they're old-school adventure-action type scenes, like sword fights. The Princess Bride is funny, touching, and well-written. If you've never seen it, there's never been a better time to buy a copy.

3. Watchmen - Zack Snyder's movie version of the Alan Moore comic book is nothing short of brilliant, and I'm surprised that it's available at such a great price. Watchmen also features a great soundtrack. The action scenes are very cool, too, especially the prison scenes.

The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three

4. The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three - Honestly, I liked the original with Walter Matthau better than this bland remake starring Denzel Washington. But it's still a passable film and an excellent value, and Travolta always makes a great villain when he plays one.

5. I Am Legend - Most movies like this feature a band of survivors facing the zombies after the end of the world, but I Am Legend features a sole survivor versus the creepies. This is the third film adaptation of Richard Matheson's novel of the same name. It's better than Omega Man, but not as good as The Last Man on Earth.

6. District 9 - I was surprised by what a good movie this was, and I was also surprised to see it available for less than $10 on Blu-ray. If you like sci fi action movies, then this is one definitely worth checking out.

7. The Terminator - Obviously, this is an Arnold Schwarzenegger classic, and it's worth another look, especially if you haven't seen it in a long time. It's not as good, flashy, or glitzy as Terminator 2: Judgment Day, but it's well worth seeing nonetheless.

8. Batman - Tim Burton's first Batman feature film made us realize that yes, Michael Keaton could portray Bruce Wayne and Batman. Jack Nicholson's portrayal of the Joker is about as different from Heath Ledger's more recent performance as you could imagine, too.

9. Batman Returns - You might as well get Burton's sequel, since it's also under $10, and since we're already recommending the first one. Danny Devito is pretty funny as the Penguin too, and Michelle Pfeiffer is definitely hot as Catwoman. Christopher Walken is WAY over the top, too.

10. Hancock - Tired of superhero movies yet? I'm not, and I hope you're not either, because my next recommendation is for another Will Smith vehicle called Hancock. It's better than the reviewers said, and Jason Bateman gives an excellent supporting performance.
