Best 2011 Action Movies Preview

Action films have begun to make something of a comeback in the last few years, so I wanted to list off some of the best 2011 action movies to anticipate.

Sucker Punch

Sucker Punch is shaping up to be a fanboy's dream--a Zach Snyder film starring 5 Hollywood hotties and tons of battle scenes. The five heroines are Baby Doll, Sweet Pea, Rocket, Blondie, and Amber, played respectively by Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, and Jamie Chung. The story apparently shifts to different realities, which affords them the girls to fight in with all kinds of different weapons, so it should be a wild ride.

Thor

For those who consider comic book hero movies to be an action movie, and not its own genre, then this CGI action fest should be at the top of your list. The early screenshots of the Thor movie look awesome, though they had me worried with the first releases of Anthony Hopkins and his Odin eyepatch. Kenneth Branagh is the director, while newcomer Chris Hemsworth played the title role. Natalie Portman is the love interest, Hopkins plays Odin, and Tom Hiddlestom is the plotting Loki. My one wish is they include enough battle scenes--and show how mighty Thor's hammer blows are--that the non-comics crowd walks out of the theater saying: "Thor is the baddest superhero on the planet."

If that happens, then Thor will be great.

Battle: Los Angeles

Early buzz compares the battle scenes in Battle: Los Angeles to Blackhawk Down. In fact, the film is being touted as "Blackhawk Down with aliens". If Battle gets anywhere close to that effective, this should be a great action movie to watch. For those who love watching tough chicks, you get to see Michelle Rodriguez play her umpteenth role as a tough chick, as she's the main protagonist in a role as a soldier fighting the aliens.

Super 8

It's hard to tell what "Super 8" is going to be about, given J.J. Abrams legendary secrecy around his projects. Abrams admits his latest film has nothing to do with Cloverfield, though anyone watching the trailers can't help but get the sense the two stories have similarities. In the trailer, a train is carrying something in boxcar for the U.S. Air Force, and the train is headed towards Area 51. Suddenly, a truck causes the train to derail, and something begins busting out of the boxcar. That's about all I know, but after Cloverfield, this is going to be must viewing.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Once again, a movie based on a Marvel Comics title. This one should fit into the classic description of an action film, since you would think Captain America battles should involve a great deal fewer computer graphics than Thor's movie. Chris Evans plays "Cap", and he should be terrific in the role. Evans already starred as Johnny Storm (Human Torch) in the Fantastic Four movies, and whatever faults those movies had, you can't blame Chris Evans' performance. Hugo Weaving plays the Red Skull, which is great news. Weaving went the entire V For Vendetta movie without revealing his face, which I was concerned about, so hopefully we get something similar in the Captain American movie.

This movie should be a slam dunk. You get America's most patriotic superhero going against Nazis, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. It would take a complete filmmaking moron to mess this story up.

Cowboys vs Aliens

Daniel Craig plays an outlaw hero cowboy, Harrison Ford plays the angry sheriff who wants him dead, and Jon Favreau directs this Steven Speilburg production. That means you get a big money blockbuster for all those CGI aliens who come to the Old West and want to shoot up the town. Mysteriously, Daniel Craig has a futuristic wristband that lets him shoot down alien spacecraft. If this sounds stupid, avoid Cowboys Versus Aliens. If it sounds super cool, circle July 29th on your calendar.
